The Unfair World of a College Student

Tess Brown

I'm always broke. I'm at the point in my life where every dime I make is just to keep my head closer to the surface...not above the water, but just closer to the top... The ocean of student doubt. It's something I was lucky enough to avoid for a bit, but ultimately it caught up to me, seeing as I'm paying for my own college tuition, and it’s pretty much impossible to pay for your college when you are in college... That's the issue. I work very hard during the summer and school year, but don't come close to paying off my school year. I'm also working on saving up for a car, which is a money hog in itself.

Recently I've been pondering what kind of lifestyle I wont to have during college. How much should I be spending on food, clothing, social fun, and other expenses? Do I really need that $70-dollar jean jacket? The sad thing is I technique have no "extra money" to treat myself. Do I treat myself anyway? Of course, because it brings me happiness. That pumpkin chia tea latte at $5 brings a smile to my face and good conversation with a friend. It's discouraging that ultimately, I'm just going to have to "pay" for those expenses later in the form of student debt. But hey... I would be such a sad person if I couldn't have some pretty things, fun outings, or comfort food.

It’s tricky because everyone's financially situation is different, but I do think a majority of the hard-working college students out there wish they could get more a reward for their use in society. This could take the form of no debt. If you think about it there are a ton of people attending college who are working their butts off and performing a use. No matter how much they grind it would take a well-paying 8-5 job to pay for college in a comfortable manner. Being college students who have to attend class, get good grades, and do other extracurricular you can't work that much. It’s supposed that you will able to instantly start paying off your school debt when you graduate and your degree gets you a job... However, that isn't so much the case anymore. The competition for jobs is hard out there. To compete people, need to get even more education, and this means more debt... It's a brutal cycle.

Since I normally like to offer solutions to problems I tried to think up how to solve your financial issues. However, I can't come up with anything you probably haven't heard before. Just the usual work hard, save up, budget, and be mindful of what you are spending your money on. One thing you can do is have a voice in education tuition through politics and voting on laws that will benefit poor college students.

Hang in there, and good luck!
